Finding Calm and Confidence: Matthew’s EPA Journey

At just 13 years old, Pyalong-based rider Matthew (MJ) Skewes is already making his mark in the equestrian world. Diagnosed with high-functioning autism, Matthew’s journey with Equine Pathways Australia began seven months ago when his mum discovered the program. “She encouraged me to give it a try,” Matthew says. “I thought it would be a good way to meet new people.”

What began as a chance to connect has grown into a space where Matthew feels truly at home. “When I’m around horses, I feel calm and like I’m part of a team. EPA helps me with my riding, my mind, and my body, they’re helping me try to become an elite athlete.”

Matthew recently competed in the 2025 Equestrian Victoria Interschool State Championships, where he took part in three Show Horse events and two dressage tests. It was his first time competing in dressage and he made an unforgettable debut, scoring 81.8% and 79.75%, winning Champion Dressage and Reserve Champion Show Horse in the All Abilities division.

Despite being unsure if he’d have a horse to ride after outgrowing his pony, a team of supporters, including his mum, coach Bianca, and horse owner Kathryn, helped make his championship debut possible. “We had just six weeks to prepare, and I’m really proud that it paid off.”

When asked what he’s learned from his time at EPA, Matthew reflects:

“Sometimes things are hard and overwhelming, but if you’re surrounded by the right people, you don’t have to be afraid.”

Matthew hopes to one day represent Australia in Virtus dressage competitions. For now, he’s enjoying the journey, riding favourite horses like Stokey, and spending time with his best friend, his dog Pika.
